I believe Art is important because it gives us a means to imagine what isn’t. In my
personal art making, I strive to create works that provoke such imaginings. The
Unicorn, a sculptural installation located at the Lodz central bus terminal
(nicknamed the “Unicorn Stable”) is of no exception.

Each variation of the mythical creature: the unicorn, is specific to the storyteller
in some instances, it is a sacred beast which can purify, while in others, it is seen
as dangerous and violent. Its most well-known characteristic: its single horn, can
be seen as a design emblem with equally varied meanings throughout visual
stories across cultures. I like to think that each individual in Lodz already has
their own subconscious unicorn image and/or story.

In order to provoke this sense of imagination, I use a star motif as a signifier, while
implementing negative space as an almost anti-signifier. I believe that this
negative space, though not suggestive of anything specific, can act as a powerful
stimulant to one’s imagination. I want this break in the sculpture to act as a space
for the viewer to subjectively fill in the blanks.

Though not as open-ended as ‘blankness,’ I rely on the star motif as another means
of tapping into the viewer’s imagination. The star motif can signify such things as:
stories told through constellations, personal theories on life and death,
wonderments of space and time, and more. By utilizing both the concept of
‘blankness’ as well as the motif of ‘stars,’ I hope the Unicorn encorages passersby to
create imagined stories guided by memories and new ideas.

To me, this bus terminal, with its many colors and layers of light, along with its
traffic of people traveling thru, symbolizes a sense of togetherness within diversity.
Considering the sociopolitical climate of the current world, I believe operating in
unison is an incredibly powerful tool in combating intolerance and division.
Working hand-in-hand with this idea, I want the Unicorn to provide another sense
of unity by creating discourse within the community. Sharing personal stories,
whether imagined or real, can create true bonds between peoples; I wish to
contribute to these conversations with this public work: the Unicorn.
